“the test, while marketed at providing 99% accuracy, is only designed to identify a “high risk” of the presence of the trisomys. A follow-up invasive test is required for confirmation.

The devastated couple were asked to come in the following Monday for a chorionic villus sampling (CVS) test, which would provide a definitive diagnosis.

The CVS is one of two tests designed for this purpose. The other is amniocentesis, which is considered to be more accurate.”

“A “never event” in medicine is a preventable error so serious that it should never happen. The Merrion Fetal Health Clinic – owned by five consultants Peter McParland, Fionnuala McAuliffe, Rhona Mahony, Shane Higgins and Stephen Carroll – and the National Maternity Hospital (NMH), admitted full liability this week for a “never event”: aborting a healthy baby, Christopher Joseph Kiely.

This is not just a private tragedy resulting in unending grief for Christopher’s parents, Rebecca Price and Patrick Kiely. The systemic failures leading to this catastrophe must be fully examined.

The couple is calling for an independent inquiry to establish the full facts of what happened to them, how many other times this tragedy has happened, and for consistent implementation of standards to prevent it from ever happening again.

The journey to getting an admission of complete liability took two years, three months and nine days.”

“They are now at the beginning of the end of a harrowing, cruel and torturous journey.”

Those were the words of Rebecca Price and Patrick Kiely’s solicitor outside the Four Courts on Wednesday as the couple settled an action over the termination of their healthy pregnancy after being wrongly advised the baby had a fatal foetal abnormality.

Rebecca Price, clutching her partner’s hand, shuddered and fought back tears as their solicitor Caoimhe Haughey pointed out that the son they call Christopher Joseph would have been two years old this summer.

Now the couple want to meet with Health Minister Stephen Donnelly as soon as possible to work with him on ways to ensure what they called “ this never event” never happens again.
